Re: Austrian Cannons
In Response To: Austrian Cannons ()

Hello Art;
Major Caleb Huse was appointed as a special purchasing agent for the Confederacy, to purchase arms, munitions and other supplies. He was sent to Europe in late summer 1861 and found the English arms market emptied by the recent Europeon wars. Despite the efforts of the agents of the US government to interfere with his work, he made contracts to purchase the production of the English arms manufacturers so the Federals could not get them. He traveled to central Europe still seeking arms and he found a large assortment of weapons and munitions available in Austria. Here, he purchased at least 75,000 Austrian rifles, part of the total of 185,000 arms purchased in Europe by Huse. Also purchased out of the Austrian State Arsenal was 6 pounder Austrian field guns and 24 pounder Austrian howitzers with their equipments. These Austrian cannon, although referred to as the same designation in the US Ordnance system, were actually slightly larger and had to be fired by using material wrapped around the balls. Although my references are sketchy about the Austrian cannon, it is known that at least 17 6 pounders and 7 24 pounder howitzers were purchased and sent to the CSA. Major Huse, "using rare forecast" also purchased shoes, clothing, cloth and blankets. He remained in Europe for long time and was very effective in his efforts.

Hope this helps
Ron
