Thanks Ron. I knew I would hear from you. There was an unexploded round found near Fort Lee in Petersburg a few days ago. It was a 12 pounder round. The newspaper article called it "shell". A reenacting friend disputed the term and said it was case shot. I told him that I thought the Confederates experimented with shell in smooth bores because of trouble they were having getting the small bursting charge to detonate in case shot. Apparently this round could have indeed been shell. Of course without xraying or dismantling we'll never know. They rendered it safe by detonating it. Oh well. Thanks for your input.
