Amen to that buddy. If you read back (in the diary) you will find that the Federals had moved into some Confederate skirmish/picket line trenches and rifle pits that the infantry (CS) had abandonded. The Confederates were coming up the hill out of the Totopotomoy Creek bottom. And as it was a "run and gun" affair, all forces headed towards Cold Harbor, it had to be a total state of confusion. I wonder if those boys in blue thought they were marching into a more defensible or protected position? Why would they have moved from line of battle into a column? White writes that they were almost 100 yards from their other section gun. It's hard to imagine what those guys went through. And canister at 20 yards on a column of infantry? How did those fellows keep going? They were blown down like young corn in a tornado. I don't live far from this scene. It's not marching/walking/hiking friendly. Great night fire shot. I'm assuming you are a reenactor. What unit and where?
