Brenda, Yes, artillery companies quite often served separate from their regiment or battalion. A reason for the difficulty in understanding where this battery (C-13th N C Art. Battalion) served is the complex history of this battery. The battery formed on April 1, 1861 for one year service. It was commanded by Capt. John J Hedrick as Battery C, 2nd North Carolina Artillery. Its official name was the Cape Fear Light Artillery but served known by the name of its commander. It served as field artillery from the spring of 1861 to the fall of 1862 in North Carolina. From the late fall of 1862 to early winter 1863, it served as heavy artillery troops probably in North Carolina. It probably continued as heavy artillery troops until it was reorganized in November 1863 as light artillery again.

The second organization of this battery was on November 4, 1863 while in the field, Dept. of North Carolina. It was assigned to the 13th North Carolina Light Artillery of six batteries, as Battery C commanded by Captain James D Cummings. Companies A, B, C, D, E continued service in North Carolina but in late summer, 1864, battery F was sent to the Army of Northern Virginia. Battery C, Cumming's Battery was still serving in North Carolina armed with two 12 pound Napoleons and two 6 pound smooth bore field guns as its armament. Sometime in the first quarter of 1865, the 2nd section of Battery F was sent back to North Carolina while the 1st section of Battery F remained behind in the Army of Northern Virginia. This split of the battery explains why the 1st Section surrendered on April 9th, 1865 at Appomattox and the 2nd section surrendered on April 26, 1865 as part of the Army of Tennessee.

In this brief summary of the battery, I made no attempt to list battles of the battery. I'll leave that for another day. I hope this may clear some little things up for you. The history of this battery, compared to others is quite complex.
