Sorry, pressed the wrong button, lets try again.
Mr. Readman:
Since the Seven Stars Artillery was a Mississippi field artillery battery, Mr. Bergeron gave you a good suggestion. I have only a brief outline of the battery which I hope will assist you in your search.

The battery was raised in the spring of 1862 of men from Hines and Rankin counties. I believe the battery was mustered in at Hazelhurst MS and was commanded by Capt. Calvit Roberts and had 4 officers and 130 men when formed. The battery was a six gun battery during the time of its service in the Dept. of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It is not mentioned in the several books I have concerning Vicksburg, Iuka and Corinth which suggests the battery saw service only in the Port Huson region. It continued service until it was surrendered with the entire garrison of Port Hudson on July 9th, 1863. Two of the sections of the battery were included in the surrender while one section had been on the outside, serving with Colonel John Logan's cavalry command. This third section was not included in the surrender and was probably the section that later served in the Meridan campaign in February and March 1864 as part of General Wirt Adams'cavalry brigade. The section had two guns, one being a 6 pounder field gun and the other a 12 pounder howitzer, both bronze. The battery (or section) disbanded on Feb. 23rd, 1864 with the men being transferred into Moorman's battalion. Some sources state that the battery was partially reorganized after Port Hudson but I believe they are confusing the surviving section with what they believe to be an attempt to reform the entire battery. The battery was never reformed.
I found references to this battery in the books "Sherman's Forgotten Campaign" by Margie Riddle Bearss, Gateway Press, Inc. Baltimore MY, 1987 and the book "Port Hudson Confederate Bastion on the Mississippi" by Lawrence Lee Hewitt. Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge LA 1987. Capt. Roberts is listed in the index (volume 130)of the Official Records of the Civil War as being in volumes 15, 24, 31, 32, and 39. The Seven Stars Artillery is also listed in the same general index in volumes 15,17,24,26,and 30-32 of the Official Records. Volumes 32 mentions Capt Roberts on recruiting duty in Mississippi and later commander of Moorman's Mississippi Cavalry Battalion. To understand the wartime service of the Seven Star Artillery, you may have some luck by following the career of Capt. Roberts.
Hope this helps
Ron Black
