6 pounder "howitzers"

Ok, can anyone explain why in many books about ACW battles 6 lb "howitzers" are claimed to have been part of this battery or that? Such a piece was certainly not part of the 1841 standards, instead there was the 6 pound smoothbore gun, and that was common at the start of the war. The bottom of the howitzer range of the time was the 12 pound howitzer and 12 pound mountain howitzer.

In a number of cases the authors don't seem to realize that a 6 lb gun and a 6 lb howitzer would be different tubes. About the only references I see to 6 lb howitzers would be during the War of Independence time frame.

Even the old Civil War Generals II game lists these "6# howitzers." I suspect that in the case of CWGII these were actually meant to portray 12 lb mountain howitzers with their diminutive sized tubes (but large bore.) And CWGII also has horse arty portrayed like 12 lb mountain howitzers in effect, but listed as 3" horse artillery...go figure.
