The 20th Bn. of Heavy Artillery was part of Crutchfield's Artillery Brigade, along with the 10th, 18th, and 19th Heavy Artillery Battalions. Crutchfield's Brigade also contained a battalion of 5 independent batteries which were light artillery manning heavy guns at Chaffin's Bluff, south of Drewry's Bluff. Crutchfield's Brigade was noted for their gallantry at the Battle of Sayler's Creek.
