No doubt he received some sort of transportation at least to Mississippi; at least that is also my opinion. I would say Vicksburg would more than likely be his drop off point and he probably walked from there which is still a pretty far piece. I am sure the story is not as accurate as the actual event, but one thing that could be a factor is he was disfigured and that added time to his travel.

At the least the story makes for some good reading------
