November 1864 POW Deliveries
In Response To: Re: Venus Point, GA ()

Clifford & George:

A large delivery of paroled Confederate prisoners of war was made at Venus Point near the mouth of the Savannah River in mid-November 1864. These men were selected for release because they were sick and disabled, and some could have died en route or at the delivery point. These men came from Fort Delaware and Point Lookout although some could have been sent to either prison as a prescursor to this release. The Federals were trying to force the Confederates to accept a one-for-one exchange at the point of physical delivery (contrary to the provisions of the 1862 Dix-Hill Cartel), so I am pretty sure that Federal POWs were handed back at the same time. But I have not researched any of their names.

Do you have a name that we can look up in the CMSR?
