Dornbusch, an overview

"Military Bibliography of the Civil War," by Charles E. Dornbusch. New York Public Library, New York City, 1972. Three volumes. Third printing, 1994. Originally published as "Regimental Publications and Personal Narratives of the Civil War." Volume IV published by Morningside Press.

This set of books is a must have for anyone seeking to locate material related to an individual Civil War unit. It includes not only books pertaining to those regiments, but also magazine articles and other published materials, such as copies of speeches given at regimental reunions, etc. While many of the earlier materials can be very difficult to locate, Dornbusch at least makes the researcher aware that the material is out there somewhere. Needless to say, the books do not include every possible item available on any given unit – unpublished material is not mentioned, nor are theses and dissertations, or any material published since the book was last updated. But Dornbusch is still the first stop for anyone considering researching a particular Civil War unit.

Volume I is in seven parts, and covers units of the Northern States. Volume II covers units from Southern, Border, and Western States, along with Federal Troops (non-state units). It also has a section on both Northern and Southern biographies. Volume III covers General References (with sections on such things as ethnic groups, monuments, prisons and prisoners, railroads, engineers, recruitment, signal corps, sutlers, and a host of others), the various armies and corps, and individual battles listed by states. Volume IV was published separately in the 1980s, and has sections on Additions and Corrections, and a General Index.
