My maternal G-G-Grandfather, Geo. P. Phelps enlisted 8/14/1862 in the 131st Illinois Infantry. On 10/13/1863, he transferred to the 29th. Illinois Infantry. I was wondering how or why this would happen. Did the 131st go away? I know I had other family members in the 29th.
