thank you George for that informative reply. i'll have to look into it more but I believe I have seen that the 127th. Illinois was at Vicksburg and
perhaps the Wisconsin unit and the 127th. were together for a period of time. the bird would have been in Washington, D.C. in 1877 it looks like.
makes me wonder if one of the 5 men went to D.C. at that time and went to see the bird and somehow got a feather that came from the bird or
did someone have a box full of feathers claimed to be from the bird and was selling them as souvenirs. I think I gave the photo with the feather
under the glass to my sister along with other photos and tin types and papers. I wonder if the Smithsonian would want to do a D.N.A. test on
the two feathers and if they matched, if they would like the donation of another feather. i'll have to do some checking on it.
someone on this site always seems to have an answer. I appreciate that.
