My GGGrandfather was transfered to the IL Provost/recruiting service in May of 1863. He operated mainly out of Camp Yates some Camp Butler but, later set up a recruiting office in St.Charles Kane CO.IL.
There are specific records to IL. I need time to locate. If indeed he hired a substitute there would be a record so he wouldn't be arrested.
My GGGrandfathers papers have the heading "Headquarters Sup't Vol.Recruiting" originally "Office of Ass't Provost Marshal Gen'l,Illinois"
