Thanks, George! I found a history of the regiment that gives a brief summary of service for each man in the 49th. There's a few listed as "killed in action at Cumberland Ford on Sept.12, 1862". I wonder if those might be the ones killed at Baptist Gap. You'd think if they had men scalped, they would have included it in a report?
