Can I imbed "html" tags in my posts?

Yes, you can use HTML tags in the body of the message; however, the CWPMB software is able to recognize URL's (webpage addresses) and email addresses and automatically make them "active" hyperlinks or "hotlinks". In addition, if you'd like to add an image to your message, you can enter or "cut and paste" the URL of the image into the box on the "Post New Message" page that says "Optional Image URL". If for purposes of enhancing the text in your message you'd like to change font color, size, boldface, etc., you may do so.

If I include my email address with my posting is it really secure?
OR
I entered my email address in my posting, but I don't see it when I go back to the message index? Will I still receive "automatic email notification" if someone responds to my message?

Email addresses entered into the "Email Address:" input box on the "Post New Message" page are NOT displayed in your final, posted message; however, the message board software keeps track of your email address in a secure encrypted, binary file which will allow you to receive email notifications of responses to your message(s) even though you don't see it in your message. Your email address is only accessible to me, Jim Martin, as the board administrator. I will not sell, forward or in any other way distribute your email address or any other personal information about you without your permission.

We have a number of published authors, college professors, National Park Service and government employees who might be deluged by direct contact if their email address appeared in their postings? To protect their privacy email addresses included in the headers of their postings are NOT displayed or accessible, as they are stored in a binary, encrypted file. In addition, some people simply prefer not to show their email address for personal reasons or concerns that "internet" programs designed to "worm out" email addresses with programs referred to as "robots" or "spiders" might include them in a "SPAM" list.

If you would like to include your email address for everybody to see, you may do so by simply entering it in the "body" of your message. Email addresses entered into the body of your message WILL be displayed and accessible for everyone to see, as well as, to the programs described above. Respect the privacy and wishes of others and PLEASE DO NOT POST THE EMAIL ADDRESSES, MAILING ADDRESSES, PHONE OR FAX NUMBERS OR OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION OF THIRD-PARTIES, UNLESS YOU HAVE OBTAINED THEIR PRIOR PERMISSION TO DO SO.

Where is my message or why was my message deleted?

Infrequently, someone posts a message which includes, profanity, an objectionable image, insulting or demeaning remarks or copyrighted material. If I delete or redact a message, and I do this rarely, I will send the author of the message an email notifying them of this action and asking that they re-think or rephrase their posting.

Please respect the feelings of others and respect their right to have an opposing or different viewpoint. The message board can be a site not only for answers to your questions, but a place for enlightening and intellectual debate. Please show your maturity and thoughtfulness by keeping your postings factual, referencing source materials and "do not" attack the poster of the message, challenge their argument.

My primary motivation in taking any action or controlling the "free speech" on this site is to encourage participation of as many people from as many different backgrounds and perspectives, as possible. If the postings are dominated by "fiery exchanges", "salty language" or "controversial issues" we may "scare off" those gentler folks, respected and acknowledged authorities and others who may have a significant contribution to make to the scholarship on this message board.

I am NOT here to be a morality judge, limiter of "free speech" or overly controlling of the issues discussed; however, I will act in my best judgment in the best interest of the message board and its contributors.

May I advertise a product, promote a book, etc., on the message board?

Yes, but with limitations. I do not allow "off topic" and/or commercial advertisements or notices to be posted on the message board. However, if you're a contributor to this site and you'd like to "plug" your new book, tell us about an SCV or CWRT meeting, re-enactment, tour or something else of interest to the participants here, please do so. If I feel your posting is "off topic" or inappropiate, I will delete it and email you with my reason(s). If you are not sure you're posting falls within the approved criteria, send it to me by email, cwmb-admin@history-sites.net and I will approve or reject it.

If you're a regular contributor to the Civil War Prisons Message Board and have responded to and attempted to help others with their questions, I will reward your participation by placing an "ad" for your book (remember, it must somehow be related to the Civil War) on our "Authors" page. If you are an author, website owner or wish to promote a Civil War related business or product you may always put links or ads on your "User Profile" page, but also be aware that your "User Profile" won't appear unless you have a non-commercial posting on the message board. If you're an author, I encourage and recommend you to list your books and articles.
