.. despite the saber type "designation" model (Artillery, Cavalry, Foot Officer, etc), in many cases they were utilized interchangably by many, pending availability. It was not totally rare to find artillery making use of cavalry sabers, and vice-versa occasionally. Ive also seen In some period photos of identified artillery officers carrying M1840 Cav sabers. Cav sabers certainly being more abundant in numbers usually. Kinda-sorta like the same issue regarding Colts "Navy" Revolver.... more used on land than on water....

PS.. The James Rifle is a nice gun, yanked the lanyard on one many times. One reenactment unit I was with in years past had an original.
