It appears that the greatest extent of the usage of the Seacoast Mortar by the South was not as a projector of bombs, but the use of the shells as landmines. Both Rains and Mallet developed pressure sensitive gains for this use.Several examples in the West Point Museum that were set at Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, Alabama.
One example was found in a road used by lumber trucks. Someone had neglected to take off the screw-on cap that acted as a safety for the device.
