Re: Robinson's Co., Howitzer Btry., 1st La. Cav.

Refer to the book "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units, 1861-1865", by Art Bergeron, Louisiana State University Press, 1989. See the information concerning Robinson's Horse Artillery, page 36. Lieutenant William H. Holmes commanded this battery September 1861 to the Summer of 1863. At that time, the battery was reorganized when survivors of Wheat's Louisiana Infantry Battalion were added to the battery to make it up to full strength and Lieutenant N. T. N. Robinson became commander and was promoted to captain. It continued in Colonel John Scotts Cavalry Brigade in central Tennessee and in the Chickamauga campaign until, during a consolidation of the horse artillery batteries of the Army of Tennessee in December 1863, it was consolidated into another horse artillery battery and went out of existence.

To confuse the issue, it appears another battery was organized in March, 1864 and was attached to the 1st Louisiana Cavalry. See Holmes' Battery on page 32 of same book. Commanded by Captain Eugene H. Holmes (not the earlier mentioned Holmes) and may have been attached but not a organic part of the 1st Louisiana. It saw limited service until it suffered heavy losses at Woodville Mississippi and remained in service with only remnants of personal and one gun. It ended the war as manning heavy guns at Mobile Alabama. The survivors were paroled in May, 1865 at Meridan Mississippi. Hope this helps and note that Art Bergeron has been a contributor to this site in the past.
