Re: Confederate Artillery Question

Matthew, Another place you might research for unequipped artillery units is Missouri. I've just received copy of a letter dated April 17, 1861, to President Jefferson Davis from Gov. C.F. Jackson of Missouri. The letter states fears of the "abolisionist" control of the St. Louis Arsenal being "greatly in our way in the event of active hostilities being commenced." Jackson requested support in the form of "loan of a few large guns and mortars" with which to "batter down its walls".

The letter was delivered by a military commission from Missouri comprising Captains Duke and Green. No help was forthcoming in the nature of the request as the requested ordnance simply did not exist.

Watching the events of the April days in Missouri caused the superintendent of the St. Louis Streetcar Co. to resign his post and regain his commission in the U.S. Army. His name was William Techumseh Sherman.
