In looking over the Official Records reports, I agree with Bill's summary. When Captain Marshall said that he fired 700 rounds he was referring to the entire battle in which he held three different positions. The Chief of Artillery Lyman Bridge's report indicated that Marshall's battery fired 47 percussion shells, 231 fused shells, 361 case shot, 126 cannister rounds for a total of 765 rounds during the campaign. This officer's report stated that a section from Marshall's Battery opened (cannister) on the railroad cut supporting one of his sections.
So the question is how far were the guns from the railroad cut?
