hi George
that's him.
I can't tell you at what or where I have looked over the past few years, but there are lists of the 36th he is not on and others that he is on. mike Elliott suggested I look on goggle books for "the history of the 36th. regiment of the Illinois volunteer infantry during the war of the rebellion" by Bennett and haigh.
I found it and it covers everything from the beginning to the end of the war. I now know where the names of jenk or jenks and smith (not related) and sherer became associated with this group of independent cavalry.
now, right or wrong, I really have not found that 100% confirming information that satisfies me, but family history says that he and a man named duran (and there is a john s. duran in company B and is the 2nd. lieutenant) supplied the horses for the company and that they were later reimbursed by the federal gov't. for the horses. true ??? false ??? that search continues.
I know I saw something in just the past few days about the 36th. that he was not listed on but I think it was a listing of the regiment near the end of the war or at the time of being mustered out. as you found, for whatever reason, he resigned the army on 4-1-1862.
that might have been on "the civil war notebook" blog. or perhaps it might have been on the "trans-Mississippi" blog pages. I've also nosed around on the "civil war talk" site. those 3 and this site have some great things to read but I am really only looking for my family members and not trying to learn everything about some battle, not even pea ridge, that Samuel was a part of and is mentioned by name in the goggle book I mentioned above, page 151.
I was impressed with him and his service, even if it was short, because he would have been 44-45 years old and had only been in America since 1842. I guess he liked his new adopted country.
that was very nice of you to take the time to look him up as you did and on that other post, my great grandfather, frank perkins smith. see that post for some on him. I'm really impressed by the willingness of other folks on these sites to look someone up as you did and post that information for me to find. I try very hard to confirm anything I find via several sources. there is one (idiot) on ancestry who has his enlistment information as a confirming source but he is only 21 or 22 years old and is from a town Samuel never lived in. the only thing that matched was the name. so, again, thanks for finding the right guy.
