Re: 103rd Illinois Infantry deserters

Hello, I don't know the specifics of your kin.My GGGrandfather was assigned to the Illinois Provost Marshal General in May of 1863.Latter in the war he was again transfered to Recruiting under the Illinois Superintendent of Volunteer Recruiting Service. He escorted transfers do to injuries or wounds from their regiment of muster to the Invalid Corps.at Camp Douglas. In one of the papers he was asked to keep a look out for a deserter as he might of gone home. I found that person had been killed in action at Chickamaunga and hadn't deserted. My GGGrandfathers brother as listed as deserted but, family records state he showed up to his assigned regiment and the regimental surg. discharged him for health reasons. He had already been turned down from another attempt to enlist.Family records state he helped the war effort at Camp Kane for the balance of the war which was a mile or so down river. My point is not all records are accurate.I would think the local Provost would have been charged to look for them. I would try the Illinois Provost Marshal Generals Office as well as Illinois Superintendent of Volunteer Recruiting. The Conscription Act was implimented in March of 1863.You state they enlisted, when? Some enlisted ,reluctantly, under the threat of being drafted in the fall of 1862.do you have their compiled military service records?
