Re: range
In Response To: Re: range ()

Most of the battles fought in Mr. Lincolns War did not have the lead time that would have lead to preplanned firing. Exceptions to this were set positions. The attack on New Orleans was the first use of blind fire (by the Mortar Flotilla) done by artillery in history. Accounts of survey activities in Series I, Volume 18, ORN. See references to Gerdes, Oltmann, survey party members. I understand both of those fellows left memoirs, though I haven't read them as yet.
One case I know of regarding a battlefield being preplanned for artillery fire was the Battle of Olustee (Lake City).
Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard travelled the terrian and laid out the plan personally on the spot, with ensuing success. Federal direction of travel was known.
Pensacola and other seacoast fortifications had firing angles on plans, with ranges.
Probably more of interest from an accuracy standpoint regarding the timeframe of your enquiry would be the accuracy of the fuzes available.
